Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a procedure where the sperm is processed in the lab and then placed directly into the woman’s uterus, at the time of ovulation. This means the sperm is closer to the fallopian tubes at the time of insertion and so has a shorter distance to travel in order to reach the egg.
Success Rate Globally
IUI is often performed in conjunction with drugs to stimulate ovulation – if this is the case, then the woman’s cycle will be closely monitored to ensure that the eggs have reached maturity, and a trigger shot will be given to release the egg into the fallopian tube before the sperm is injected. If no fertility drugs are being used, the procedure is usually performed around two weeks into your monthly cycle.
The sperm will be washed and separated in the laboratory, to ensure that only the fastest-moving sperm are inserted into the uterus, as this gives the best chance of successful fertilisation. The sperm is inseminated using a catheter which leads directly to the woman’s womb.
The procedure is very quick and relatively painless, although some women may experience slight cramping sensations immediately afterwards and you may wish to rest for a while before leaving the clinic. We will ensure that you have all the time you need to recover, both physically and emotionally.
BOOK AN APPOINTMENTIUI is one of the most popular fertility treatments available, as it increases the chance of egg fertilisation and is perceived to be less invasive than IVF.
Because of the process of separating the sperm and because the sperm are inserted at such proximity to the fallopian tubes, IUI is particularly useful for couples with unexplained infertility, IUI can also be used for couples where disability is a hindrance to natural conception.
Although this treatment is generally believed to be less successful than IVF treatment, it does often result in conception, and can be a great first step for couples who are unsure about putting themselves through the emotional strain of IVF.
There can be stress and anxiety involved in any fertility treatment and we aim to minimise worry for all our patients as much as possible, ensuring that you are comfortable throughout the process.
